Jesus: The Object of Our Faith

Jesus: The Object of Our Faith

What is faith?

Hebrews 11:1 (ESV)- Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

As a Christian I’ve been guilty of answering by quoting this passage. It’s the typical go to scripture we learned in Sunday School.

A couple months ago, a podcast challenged me to read the rest of the chapter. It’s amazing that we can take something so far out of context.

The Shepherd and His Sheep

This week we will be discussing the Shepherd and his sheep. Just a warning: this blog might offend some people, but it’s meant to be encouraging. I hope you will read it with grace knowing that I’m not the final authority on the Bible and I’m just sharing what I’ve found.

Jesus called himself the good shepherd when he was on earth and commissioned Peter to feed his sheep before he ascended to Heaven.

Let’s begin by looking at some scripture that makes reference to believers being sheep.

Servants and Friends

This is part 3 of our relationship series. It’s funny, initially I placed servants and friends together to cover more ground in this blog, so that this series wouldn’t drag on forever. Then the more I studied friendship and servanthood regarding God and the Bible, the more I realized that they intertwine. The scriptures that I want to discuss in this blog are John 15 and James 2. I will pull from other parts of the Bible as well, but this is where the largest part of my study took place. Once again, I highly recommend reading these chapters for yourself and asking God to reveal the truth to you on a personal level.

Alright, let’s take a look at the scripture. We will start with the words of Jesus.

Relationship Series Part #1

Relationship Series Part #1

This is part one of our relationship series. In this series I will share my understanding of a Christian's relationship with God. I am doing seven parts because I believe if viewing through one lense would have worked, then the writers throughout the Bible wouldn’t have used so many examples to explain our union with God. In many aspects, our relationship with him is like a lot of our earthly relationships, but every example is flawed in one way or another. At the end of the day, he is bigger than anything we can even imagine.

Alright, let’s dig in.

How to be a Light in Your Workplace

How to be a Light in Your Workplace

Jesus’ ministry took place primarily in Israel with a few exceptions. The radius he traveled was roughly 10,000 sq miles. For comparison, my home state of Oklahoma is 69,000 sq miles. His entire ministry could have fit in one state, yet he reached the entire world.

How?

Active Prayer

Active Prayer

Turning: “I'll pray for you.” Into: “How can I help you?"

Here's an example of what I'll be discussing today:

John Doe posts on Facebook: “I am really struggling, I lost my job, and I will possibly lose my house if I don't come up with an extra $100 this week.” Nine people respond with: "I'll pray that God will provide for you." Then one guy gives John $100. The nine people then say: "Look our prayer worked!" and go on about their day. This bothers me because if all the people would have given $10, then there would be no need for a prayer/prayer fulfillment scenario. Instead of everyone giving a little, one person gives a lot. This example includes money, but you could replace money with time, work, or anything else and it would still be just as strange.

Thankful for the Proof

Thankful for the Proof

I'm sitting in a chair holding the proofs for my book, looking at my daughter, thinking about my wife, and bawling my eyes out. Eight years ago I was a broken drug addict who thought he would die before his 21st birthday. God had different plans.

How Can I Love Like Jesus Did?

How Can I Love Like Jesus Did?

The glowing boxes in our living rooms have lied to us about love.

John 15:9-17 (NLT)- “I have loved you even as the Father has loved me. Remain in my love. When you obey my commandments, you remain in my love, just as I obey my Father’s commandments and remain in his love. I have told you these things so that you will be filled with my joy. Yes, your joy will overflow! This is my commandment: Love each other in the same way I have loved you. There is no greater love than to lay down one’s life for one’s friends. You are my friends if you do what I command.  I no longer call you slaves, because a master doesn’t confide in his slaves. Now you are my friends, since I have told you everything the Father told me. You didn’t choose me. I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce lasting fruit, so that the Father will give you whatever you ask for, using my name. This is my command: Love each other."

How Do I Overcome Fear?

How Do I Overcome Fear?

John 14: 27 (NLT)- “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid.”

Jesus said those words to his disciples when explaining what would happen after his death and resurrection. His peace is more than anything the world can give. I can personally attest to that since I spent a lot of time lost, trying to find anything to give me peace.
